Robert’s Run – May 24. 2009

An open letter to:  Milton HOG, Her Sister Chapters, Families & Fellow Riders

From:  Louise Musselwhite

I’d like to extend to you my appreciation for your participation at this year’s “Robert’s Run”.  Jack Baumber and the members of the Elora Legion are thrilled to have us visit with them each year.  They are already looking forward to next year’s event.  The date is yet to be set, so check the web site.

We had a great day this past Robert’s Run.  The Mohawk Inn provided us with breakfast to help us on our way.  There were approximately 259 bikes present and several of them were “two up”.  The Ontario HOG Chapters that we saw in attendance were Durham, Scarborough, Owen Sound, Grand River, Hamilton, Huronia and of course, Milton.  We also had the Gold Wing Riders and many non-affiliated motorcyclists who came along to support Milton’s - Robert’s Run.

Our sponsoring dealer, Jacox Harley-Davidson, supported the event by supplying a gift for Jack Baumber, and his wife Yvonne, who “chair” the “Pop Tab” programme. Thank you, Marshall and Pat.  Our good friend Chuck assisted us with his truck to help haul the “Pop Tabs” to Elora.  It was great to have his truck, along with our own; we estimated that we hauled well over 1.5 tons of “Pop Tabs” from the Mohawk Inn to Elora.

The Ladies of Milton LOH, did a great job handling registration for us as well as the Donation Jar and the 50/50 Draw.  The combination of both of these brought a healthy contribution to this worthwhile cause.

Halton Region Police, kindly assisted us with traffic control as the groups left the Mohawk Inn.  The Milton Chapter Road Captains led the groups on the scenic ride to Elora.  As always, their focus was on group riding safety and this contributed to an enjoyable event

The good people of the Elora Legion made us feel very welcome again.  They provided a great lunch and the live entertainment.

Robert was able to be with us this year; his message of appreciation reminded us of how important this programme is to someone who depends on a wheelchair for his or her mobility and independence.

The Elora Legion members have been saving “Pop Tabs” since 1989, and to date have given away 1,034 wheelchairs.  Remember, it takes 1,000 tabs to make a pound of scrap aluminum, which yields about fifty cents on today’s market.  As Jack has said, “every pop tab counts!”

Again, I want to thank you, your families and friends, for the effort you put into the “Pop Tabs for Wheelchairs” program.  So many of our chapter members and their friends do such a great job collecting “tabs” throughout the year.  Your efforts are greatly appreciated.  Be proud!  You did a great job!  May God bless each and every one of you!
